Coldplay announce first tour in four years, saying it’ll be eco-friendly

Coldplay are embarking on the adventure of a lifetime, announcing that their first tour in four years will be “eco-friendly.”

The British rock band announced on Thursday that their “Music of the Spheres” world tour will be eco-friendly through the use of alternative energy. The band said they are still working on cutting the environmental impact of traveling for the 2022 tour, but the concerts themselves will run entirely on renewable energy.

“We’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis,” the band wrote Thursday. “So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward.”

As part of the band’s plan for alternative energy, the concerts will include “kinetic flooring,” which will generate power through the audience jumping up and down. The concerts will also use electricity from batteries fueled by fan power, solar energy, and recycled cooking oil from local restaurants, and the band will plant a tree for every ticket sold.

Singer Chris Martin acknowledged Coldplay may face charges of hypocrisy for some of its touring decisions, such as the band’s intent to fly on private jets, saying he doesn’t “mind the backlash” and the band members “haven’t got it perfect.”

“We could stay at home and that may be better,” Martin said. “But we want to tour and we want to meet people and connect with people, so [let’s] try and do it in the cleanest way possible.”

The 2022 tour will begin on March 18 in Costa Rica and end on Sept. 10 in Brazil. Other stops the band will make along the way include Mexico City, Texas, and the United Kingdom.
