Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday that his father had died at the age of 98.

The New York Democrat shared the news on social media in a post saying his father, Abraham “Abe” Schumer, died Wednesday evening.

“In so many ways — he personified the greatest generation. He took whatever was thrown at him no matter how difficult, did his job, never complained,” Schumer said in the post which included a family photo. “An amazing husband, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent. We love him and will miss him.”

Abe Schumer grew up in Utica, New York, served as a radar operator in planes flying over the Himalayas in World War II, and took over his father’s exterminating business after the war, according to the senator’s website.

Chuck Schumer is the oldest of three children to Abe and Selma Schumer.

The senator told reporters earlier in the week that his father had a procedure for heart problems and planned to spend Thanksgiving with him at a Long Island hospital, according to the New York Daily News.

The elder Schumer died the day after his son’s 71st birthday. Chuck Schumer was born on Thanksgiving Day in 1950.

Friends and colleagues on both sides of the political aisle shared their condolences to Chuck Schumer and his family.

“From one Chuck to another I’m sorry to hear of the death of Sen Schumer’s father Barbara & I are praying for the Schumer family,” tweeted Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, also offered condolences.

“So sorry to hear of your loss. Your father lived the American Dream: a World War II veteran, a hard-working entrepreneur, a proud father & a loving grandfather & great grandfather,” Pelosi tweeted. “May it be a comfort that so many join you & your family in mourning at this sad time.”

Chuck Schumer spoke fondly of his father when he marked Abe’s 95th birthday on Father’s Day in 2018.

“He gave us the idea that we could follow our dreams standing on his strong and weary shoulders,” Schumer said in a Senate floor speech, a video of which he shared on Twitter.
