Kansas Governor Signs Bill Allowing Broad Exemptions to COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly has signed a bill that allows workers to be exempt from COVID-19 vaccine mandates if getting vaccinated would endanger their health or violate their religious beliefs. The Republican-controlled Legislature approved the legislation in a special session on Nov. 22; the governor, a Democrat, signed it the next day. Kelly is one of the few prominent Democrats to voice opposition to President Joe Biden’s private employer vaccine mandate and reiterated her stance in a statement after she signed House Bill 2001. “I have been clear that I believe it is too late to impose a federal standard. States have been leading the fight against COVID-19 for nearly two years.
