Chicago Officials Reach Deal With Teachers’ Union to Return to Classrooms

Chicago officials and leaders of the city’s teachers’ union have reached a deal that will see teachers return to classrooms on Tuesday. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) hammered out a pact after nearly a week of negotiations. CTU members voted last week to stop teaching in-person. CPS rejected an attempt to abruptly shift to virtual learning and ended up canceling school for four days. Under the new deal, teachers and other staff members must return to schools on Tuesday and in-person classes will resume the following day. “After being out of school for four days in a row, I’m sure many students will be excited to get back into the classroom with their teachers and peers, and their parents and guardians can now breathe a much deserved sigh of relief,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, told a press conference announcing the deal.
