The Northeast is experiencing mother nature’s cold attitude, leading multiple schools to close.

Boston Public Schools announced on Monday that all of its buildings would be closed on Tuesday due to the frigid weather, with highs expected to be no more than 11 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The service issued a wind chill warning early Tuesday morning, cautioning residents in six of the state’s counties that the chilling weather would last until 4 p.m.

“Use caution while traveling outside,” the advisory said. “Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.”

The advisory also warned residents of winds that could lead the weather to drop to 20 degrees below zero. This type of weather could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The National Weather Service wrote in a short-range public discussion that the freezing weather is caused by “an expanse of arctic air” that entered the Northeast and northern mid-Atlantic Tuesday morning. The weather is expected to go into the upper 30s and 40s sometime Wednesday afternoon. Until then, residents in the Northeast are encouraged to wear a hat and gloves when going outdoors.

Schools are not the only buildings closing in response to the chilling weather. The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday that five of its COVID-19 testing sites would close on Tuesday and would not reopen until Wednesday morning. Tuesday’s temperature in New Hampshire is expected to reach a high of only 5 degrees Fahrenheit, the National Weather Service reported.
