A Philadelphia driver reportedly pulled out a gun and shot an armed teenage carjacking suspect in self-defense early Tuesday morning.

The victim described the moment he took action when confronted by the 18-year-old male suspect.

“I saw the gun, and I thought he was going to shoot me and take the car, so I retaliated as fast as I could. And just to see another day, I had to shoot the guy,” ABC6 reports.

The man, who has a valid firearms permit, fired at least five shots at the suspect, police said. The incident occurred around midnight on Tuesday at the intersection of North 17th and Folsom streets.

The suspect went to a local hospital after being shot and confessed to being at the scene of the shooting, police said.

The driver said his message to the suspect was to “stay in school. Don’t play with guns. Don’t rob people. Work for what you want.”

The incident was one of three failed carjackings in Philadelphia that night. Four suspects reportedly attempted to steal a man’s car in a Rite Aid parking lot around 11:15 p.m. on Monday. When the victim showed a weapon, the suspects fled. Investigators said one of the suspects managed to shoot the victim in the foot before fleeing.
