California woman charged with killing her three children: Police

Three young children in California are dead, and their mother is in custody following what police say was a “murder and attempted suicide.”

Patricia Ortiz is being charged after officials found three deceased children, ages 8, 5, and 3, and their mother, the 31-year-old Ortiz, with “self-inflicted wounds” from an attempted suicide, in their home in Le Grand during a welfare check Wednesday afternoon, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

The three children were identified as 8-year-old Anna Ortiz Lara, 5-year-old Matteo Ortiz Lara, and 3-year-old Alexa Ortiz Lara, police wrote in a statement on Facebook.

After deputies performed life-saving measures, Ortiz was transported from the scene to a local hospital, where her current condition is not publicly known, according to the social media post.

Ortiz is facing three counts of murder and will be booked at Merced County Jail, according to the statement.

The investigation continues, and the cause of death for the children is “pending,” officials added.
