Michigan attorney general refers false Republican electors to federal prosecutors

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel revealed Thursday night that evidence from an investigation into 16 Republicans who signed fake electoral certificates in favor of former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election had been given to federal prosecutors.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, the Democrat said her office referred the matter to the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Andrew Birge.

“We think this is a matter that is best investigated and potentially prosecuted by the feds,” Nessel said. The attorney general also noted that her office may yet decide to bring charges of its own.

Nessel’s team, as well as the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, have been scrutinizing the documents sent to the National Archives. Republican officials signed certificates asserting they were Michigan’s presidential electors and were voting for Trump even though Joe Biden won the state and its 16 electoral votes.

Republicans in other states also tried this failed strategy to overturn Biden’s victory while Trump and his allies were pushing claims of election fraud and irregularities that have been rejected by the courts and election officials.

The Republicans who signed the certificates, considered invalid by the National Archives because they lacked the governor’s signature, includes Michigan Republican Party Co-Chairwoman Meshawn Maddock, according to MLive.
