Former Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Delonte West claimed to be between jobs after a video of him panhandling appeared on social media.

“I got children. I’m in between jobs,” West said. “People can help me as much as they can, but you know, as a man, I gotta do what I got to do for my babies.” West has two children with his ex-wife.

The video captured West panhandling in Alexandria, Virginia, last week. West was also spotted panhandling in 2016 in Temple Hill, Maryland, but claimed he was helping a homeless friend at the time.

In addition to the Mavericks, West played for the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Seattle Supersonics over his eight-season career. West last played for the Dallas Mavericks in 2012.

In January 2020, a Maryland police officer filmed West while handcuffed following a domestic dispute. That video subsequently found its way to social media, with many of his NBA colleagues expressing their concern for his mental health. West had already been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2010. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would later locate West in October 2020 and pay for his rehabilitation in a Florida center.

Most recently in March, West tried out for the Big3 in Washington, D.C., and was subsequently invited to the BIG3 Combine in Las Vegas in May. While West didn’t make the cut, he said he’ll “be there next season.”

“I’m always involved in the game I love. Last year, I was scouting for the Dallas Mavericks and the previous three years, I was an NBA scout for the Boston Celtics,” West said. “I was actually looking forward to being a head coach or assistant coach in the NBA this season but like I said, it’s a business that have a lot of people involved and wanna stay involved.”

West was last arrested in October 2012 in Florida after an apparent relapse, in which he was found with open containers of alcohol while knocking on the doors of the Boynton Beach Police Department. Police charged him with disorderly intoxication and having an open container.
