A cross was the only thing remaining after a fire destroyed a church in Texas.

“A devastating loss to our community, but a sight to behold,” the Boonsville-Balsora Volunteer Fire Department said. “The fire took the structure, but not the cross.”

The fire happened at Balsora Baptist Church in Bridgeport, Texas, on Friday.

The fire department told the Washington Examiner that the parishioners used the cross, located at the altar of the church’s sanctuary, to display prayer requests for others to read.

In 2019, the cross inside the Notre Dame Cathedral was also seen as the only thing left intact, even after a fire ravaged the 850-year-old landmark in Paris.

The church’s sanctuary roof collapsed while firefighters were inside. The fire department said several firefighters were evaluated and treated on the scene.

“A symbol that the building was just that, a building,” the fire department said of the damage. “The church is the congregation, and where two or more gather, there He shall be, also.”
