Tack on an extra $1,200 annual fee: Mercedes to charge electric vehicle drivers for speed

Mercedes-Benz announced it will implement a subscription fee for electric vehicle drivers who want to go faster.

The luxury automaker said it will charge owners of its new Mercedes-EQ electric vehicle models $1,200 a year for the ability to accelerate quickly.

The “Acceleration Increase” subscription package is listed as “coming soon” on the Mercedes-Benz website.

“Unleash enhanced performance for your car,” the automaker’s included in a list of perks of the package. “Noticeable improvement in acceleration of 0.8 to 1.0 seconds (0-60 MPH).”

The subscription package follows Tesla’s “Ludacris mode” acceleration boost, which was introduced in 2016 for a one-time fee of $10,000.

In July, BMW faced backlash after announcing it would implement a subscription package for heated seats, causing the automaker to issue a statement saying cars ordered with options, such as heated seats, will remain fully operational without a subscription.
