The board of the State University System of Florida is set to vote on a policy this week that would require bathroom access to be based on biological sex, and any employee who disregards the policy could be fired.

The policy will be voted on at the Wednesday meeting of the Florida university system board of governors and would require all public universities in the Sunshine State to designate separate bathrooms and locker rooms for males and females or have a unisex facility.

According to the terms of the draft policy, universities will be required to submit documentation of their compliance with the policy by April of next year. The policy also stipulates that any employee who violates the policy could face disciplinary action “up to and including dismissal.”

The policy would affect all 12 of the state’s public universities, including the University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of Central Florida, the University of South Florida, and Florida International University.

The new policy comes a month after the Florida Board of Education approved a policy that said state university employees must use bathroom facilities corresponding with their biological sex. That policy stipulated that an employee should be fired if they violated the policy at least twice.

The policies are the latest effort by Florida public education officials to require individuals to use facilities and participate in programs that correspond to their biological sex. The state previously passed legislation that said student-athletes must compete in programs consistent with their biological sex.

“Already we are hearing from prospective students and families that they are choosing colleges elsewhere,” the LGBT activist said.
