As President Joe Biden’s 81st birthday draws attention to his advanced age, Republicans are taking advantage of the moment to point out increasing concerns over both his mental and physical abilities.
Biden is the oldest sitting president, and due to his common verbal gaffes and occasional stumbles and falls, voters have expressed worries over his ability to continue being president. Concern has become so significant that age has earned a spot on several polls of voter attitudes heading into 2024.
BIDEN’S BIRTHDAY REMINDS VOTERS ‘BUBBLE WRAP’ PLAN TO PROTECT HIM IS IN FULL SWING
The Republican National Committee called attention to this with a birthday post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Biden’s birthday blues: Americans don’t want a second Biden term,” it wrote.
The RNC included an artificial intelligence-made video in the post. In the clip, Biden appears to fall asleep at his desk while surrounded by birthday decorations and confetti. One poster in the video reads “50-year politician,” while another shows a shirtless photo of the president at the beach. “Happy birthday to the oldest president in American history,” the text reads on the screen.
Another shot shows Biden sitting in a chair, snoring alongside the decorations.

The National Republican Congressional Committee similarly hit the president by using a two-minute video supercut of various verbal gaffes Biden has made during his presidency.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) posted a different video on X for Biden’s birthday. The clip he used included various videos in which Biden appeared confused or lost, as well as footage of times when the president tripped or stumbled.
“Today is Joe Biden’s 81st Birthday. But you know what they say … age is just a number. That seems especially true when you consider how energetic, athletic, and vigorous our current President is. Happy Birthday Mr. President!” he said.

Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term. According to various recent polls, more than half are concerned about his age, his mental ability, and his physical ability. Biden’s age is even considered on par with former President Donald Trump’s significant legal troubles in terms of how big of a problem it is in the 2024 election.

However, the public is also increasingly concerned with Trump’s age, though not to the same extent. But notable shares of voters have expressed worry over Trump’s competence and ability as well.
It has been reported that the White House and Biden campaign are deploying a “bubble wrap” strategy, doing everything they can to protect Biden from stumbles, falls, gaffes, and other potentially viral moments. But such a strategy hasn’t protected the president entirely. He mixed up singers Taylor Swift and Britney Spears during a Thanksgiving press event on Monday.
