White House ‘not going to govern by polls’ as Biden approval ratings sag

The White House says it won’t govern by polls as President Joe Biden‘s approval ratings continue to sag.

The latest bad Biden poll came from NBC News, which reported that 70% of voters between ages 18 and 34 disapprove of his handling of the Israel-Hamas war. Even more worrying for Democrats, the same poll found Biden trailing former President Donald Trump.

A reporter asked press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the numbers during Monday’s White House press briefing.

“There are going to be a number of polls that are going to be coming out, which obviously we respect,” Jean-Pierre responded. “But what I’ll be very clear about is that we are not going to govern by polls here.”

Jean-Pierre continued by saying the Biden administration is focused on delivering for the public and criticizing how Trump handled the economy and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Democrats have been alarmed by surveys that are consistently finding Trump with a slim lead over Biden, who ousted Trump from the Oval Office in 2020. Biden turned 81 on Monday, with polling also showing that young people want someone else to be the Democratic nominee next year, a situation which has been exacerbated as younger voters say that they want Biden to take a less pro-Israel stance in the war.

“How do you win over young people?” the reporter asked on Monday.

Jean-Pierre stressed that by law, she can’t speak directly about elections, saying the Biden campaign could better address that problem.

“What I can say is that we’re going to continue focusing on delivering for the American people,” she said. “That includes young people.”
