NASA released a new image of a star forming region with significant detail of the thousands of stars in the area. The image was captured with the James Webb Space Telescope.
The Sagittarius C star-forming region is located 300 light-years from the Milky Way’s central supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, according to the space agency. The image, released on Monday, details the “dense center” of the Milky Way Galaxy.
The observation team’s principal investigator, Samuel Crowe, an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, said in a statement that the Webb telescope allows researchers to see star-forming regions with more detail than was previously possible.
“There’s never been any infrared data on this region with the level of resolution and sensitivity we get with Webb, so we are seeing lots of features here for the first time,” Crowe said. “Webb reveals an incredible amount of detail, allowing us to study star formation in this sort of environment in a way that wasn’t possible previously.”

The James Webb Space Telescope was launched into space by the agency in December 2021, and NASA has been releasing images from the telescope since July 2022, touting its advanced capabilities.
Since it was launched into space, images from the telescope have shown the scale and complexity of the cosmos. The telescope has made several breakthroughs as scientists seek to understand the formation of the universe.
